The name mor-hen has been recorded in English since the 13th century; the word moor here is an old sense meaning marsh. Unusually for a water bird, its huge feet aren’t webbed, making adept at covering uneven ground. Moorhens feed both on water and land and so have a varied diet of leaves, seeds, berries, worms, snails and fish, and also other birds’ eggs.
