The image of two worlds, one above and one below the surface, was one we both really liked. M.C. Escher shows it best in his ‘Three Worlds’ lithographic print.

In fact, one of the original cover ideas for the book would have been similar to this, with a fish in the depths, reflected trees on the surface and a stone skimming over them all.
